RESUMO

Semantic segmentation is vital for many emerging surveillance applications, but current models cannot be relied upon to meet the required tolerance, particularly in complex tasks that involve multiple classes and varied environments. To improve performance, we propose a novel algorithm, neural inference search (NIS), for hyperparameter optimization pertaining to established deep learning segmentation models in conjunction with a new multiloss function. It incorporates three novel search behaviors, i.e., Maximized Standard Deviation Velocity Prediction, Local Best Velocity Prediction, and n -dimensional Whirlpool Search. The first two behaviors are exploratory, leveraging long short-term memory (LSTM)-convolutional neural network (CNN)-based velocity predictions, while the third employs n -dimensional matrix rotation for local exploitation. A scheduling mechanism is also introduced in NIS to manage the contributions of these three novel search behaviors in stages. NIS optimizes learning and multiloss parameters simultaneously. Compared with state-of-the-art segmentation methods and those optimized with other well-known search algorithms, NIS-optimized models show significant improvements across multiple performance metrics on five segmentation datasets. NIS also reliably yields better solutions as compared with a variety of search methods for solving numerical benchmark functions.

RESUMO

Population growth and economic development in China has increased the demand for food and animal feed, raising questions regarding China's future maize production self-sufficiency. Here, we address this challenge by combining data-driven projections with a machine learning method on data from 402 stations, with data from 87 field experiments across China. Current maize yield would be roughly doubled with the implementation of optimal planting density and management. In the 2030 s, we estimate a 52% yield improvement through dense planting and soil improvement under a high-end climate forcing Shared Socio-Economic Pathway (SSP585), compared with a historical climate trend. Based on our results, yield gains from soil improvement outweigh the adverse effects of climate change. This implies that China can be self-sufficient in maize by using current cropping areas. Our results challenge the view of yield stagnation in most global areas and provide an example of how food security can be achieved with optimal crop-soil management under future climate change scenarios.

A Rydberg atom-based mixer has opened up a new method to characterize microwave electric fields such as the precise measurement of their phase and strength. This study further demonstrates, theoretically and experimentally, a method to accurately measure the polarization of a microwave electric field based on a Rydberg atom-based mixer. The results show that the amplitude of the beat note changes with the polarization of the microwave electric field in a period of 180 degrees, and in the linear region a polarization resolution better than 0.5 degree can be easily obtained which reaches the best level by a Rydberg atomic sensor. More interestingly, the mixer-based measurements are immune to the polarization of the light field that forms the Rydberg EIT. This method considerably simplifies theoretical analysis and the experimental system required for measuring microwave polarization using Rydberg atoms and is of interest in microwave sensing.

BACKGROUND: Storage affects rice quality significantly. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the chemical composition and in the physiological and cooking quality characteristics of three rice types after 1 year storage at 25 °C. RESULTS: Two japonica, two indica, and two indica-japonica hybrid rice varieties were selected. After storage, the total starch content decreased. The amylose content of japonica, indica, and indica-japonica hybrid rice increased by 9.63%-11.65%, 2.99%-4.67%, and 8.07%-8.97%, respectively, and the fat content decreased by 60.00%-65.00%, 37.21%-46.51%, and 41.67%-42.42%, respectively. The abscisic acid (ABA) and raffinose content decreased after 1 year's storage; the former decreased gradually during the storage and the latter increased by 19.35%-45.45%, 7.02%-10.77%, and 16.13%-28.13%, respectively, after 4 months' storage and then decreased to the lowest level after 1 year's storage. The activity of antioxidant enzymes deceased, which resulted in the increases in fatty acid value and malondialdehyde (MDA). The changes in chemical composition after 1 year storage led to the deterioration of rice cooking quality, which was reflected in the decrease in viscosity and increases in gelatinization temperature and cooked rice hardness. CONCLUSION: After 1 year's storage, the rice chemical composition changed and physiological and cooking quality characteristics decreased. Compared with japonica and indica-japonica hybrid rice, indica rice was more stable during 1 year storage. This may be due to the higher content of ABA and raffinose in fresh rice. Our findings will provide information for the identification and breeding of storable rice cultivars. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The genotype of rice variety is important factor that affect grain quality during storage. In this study, japonica, indica, and indica-japonica hybrid rice were selected to reveal the changes in amylase activities, starch fine structure, and physicochemical properties after one year of storage. Amylase activities decreased after storage and starch molecules were degraded, which, respectively, decreased and increased the content of the amylopectin long chains (DP 37+) and amylose. Changes in the starch fine structure resulted in lower swelling factors and a higher gelatinization temperature. Compared with japonica and indica-japonica hybrid rice, indica rice had a more stable starch fine structure and physicochemical properties after storage. The information obtained from this study provides a better understanding of the changes that occur in starch at the molecular level during storage and will provide insight into the breeding of storable rice varieties.

Most bacteria use type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS) systems for synthesizing fatty acids, of which the conserved FabA-FabB pathway is considered to be crucial for unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) synthesis in gram-negative bacteria. Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, the phytopathogen of black rot disease in crucifers, produces higher quantities of UFAs under low-temperature conditions for increasing membrane fluidity. The fabA and fabB genes were identified in the X. campestris pv. campestris genome by BLAST analysis; however, the growth of the X. campestris pv. campestris fabA and fabB deletion mutants was comparable to that of the wild-type strain in nutrient and minimal media. The X. campestris pv. campestris ΔfabA and ΔfabB strains produced large quantities of UFAs and, altogether, these results indicated that the FabA-FabB pathway is not essential for growth or UFA synthesis in X. campestris pv. campestris. We also observed that the expression of X. campestris pv. campestris fabA and fabB restored the growth of the temperature-sensitive Escherichia coli fabA and fabB mutants CL104 and CY242, respectively, under non-permissive conditions. The in-vitro assays demonstrated that the FabA and FabB proteins of X. campestris pv. campestris catalyzed FAS. Our study also demonstrated that the production of diffusible signal factor family signals that mediate quorum sensing was higher in the X. campestris pv. campestris ΔfabA and ΔfabB strains and greatly reduced in the complementary strains, which exhibited reduced swimming motility and attenuated host-plant pathogenicity. Social-network-based recommendation algorithms leverage rich social network information to alleviate the problem of data sparsity and boost the recommendation performance. However, traditional social-network-based recommendation algorithms ignore high-order collaborative signals or only consider the first-order collaborative signal when learning users' and items' latent representations, resulting in suboptimal recommendation performance. In this paper, we propose a graph neural network (GNN)-based social recommendation model that utilizes the GNN framework to capture high-order collaborative signals in the process of learning the latent representations of users and items. Specifically, we formulate the representations of entities, i.e., users and items, by stacking multiple embedding propagation layers to recursively aggregate multi-hop neighborhood information on both the user-item interaction graph and the social network graph. Hence, the collaborative signals hidden in both the user-item interaction graph and the social network graph are explicitly injected into the final representations of entities. Moreover, we ease the training process of the proposed GNN-based social recommendation model and alleviate overfitting by adopting a lightweight GNN framework that only retains the neighborhood aggregation component and abandons the feature transformation and nonlinear activation components. The experimental results on two real-world datasets show that our proposed GNN-based social recommendation method outperforms the state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms.

Medical audio classification for lung abnormality diagnosis is a challenging problem owing to comparatively unstructured audio signals present in the respiratory sound clips. To tackle such challenges, we propose an ensemble model by incorporating diverse deep neural networks with attention mechanisms for undertaking lung abnormality and COVID-19 diagnosis using respiratory, speech, and coughing audio inputs. Specifically, four base deep networks are proposed, which include attention-based Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (A-CRNN), attention-based bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (A-BiLSTM), attention-based bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (A-BiGRU), as well as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to optimize the training parameters of each network. An ensemble mechanism is used to integrate the outputs of these base networks by averaging the probability predictions of each class. Evaluated using respiratory ICBHI, Coswara breathing, speech, and cough datasets, as well as a combination of ICBHI and Coswara breathing databases, our ensemble model and base networks achieve ICBHI scores ranging from 0.920 to 0.9766. Most importantly, the empirical results indicate that a positive COVID-19 diagnosis can be distinguished to a high degree from other more common respiratory diseases using audio recordings, based on the combined ICBHI and Coswara breathing datasets.

Fast iterative soft threshold algorithm (FISTA) is one of the algorithms for the reconstruction part of compressed sensing (CS). However, FISTA cannot meet the increasing demands for accuracy and efficiency in the signal reconstruction. Thus, an improved algorithm (FIPITA, fast iterative parametric improved threshold algorithm) based on mended threshold function, restart adjustment mechanism and parameter adjustment is proposed. The three parameters used to generate the gradient in the FISTA are carefully selected by assessing the impact of them on the performance of the algorithm. The developed threshold function is used to replace the soft threshold function to reduce the reconstruction error and a restart mechanism is added at the end of each iteration to speed up the algorithm. The simulation experiment is carried out on one-dimensional signal and the FISTA, RadaFISTA and RestartFISTA are used as the comparison objects, with the result that in one case, for example, the residual rate of FIPITA is about 6.35% lower than those three and the number of iterations required to achieve the minimum error is also about 102 less than that of FISTA.

In Xanthomonas spp., the biosynthesis of the yellow pigment xanthomonadin and fatty acids originates in the type II polyketide synthase (PKS II) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) pathways, respectively. The acyl carrier protein (ACP) is the central component of PKS II and FAS and requires posttranslational phosphopantetheinylation to initiate these pathways. In this study, for the first time, we demonstrate that the posttranslational modification of ACPs in X. campestris pv. campestris is performed by an essential 4'-phosphopantetheinyl transferase (PPTase), XcHetI (encoded by Xc_4132). X. campestris pv. campestris strain XchetI could not be deleted from the X. campestris pv. campestris genome unless another PPTase-encoding gene such as Escherichia coli acpS or Pseudomonas aeruginosa pcpS was present. Compared with wild-type strain X. campestris pv. campestris 8004 and mutant XchetI::PapcpS, strain XchetI::EcacpS failed to generate xanthomonadin pigments and displayed reduced pathogenicity for the host plant, Brassica oleracea. Further experiments showed that the expression of XchetI restored the growth of E. coli acpS mutant HT253 and, when a plasmid bearing XchetI was introduced into P. aeruginosa, pcpS, which encodes the sole PPTase in P. aeruginosa, could be deleted. In in vitro enzymatic assays, XcHetI catalyzed the transformation of 4'-phosphopantetheine from coenzyme A to two X. campestris pv. campestris apo-acyl carrier proteins, XcAcpP and XcAcpC. All of these findings indicate that XcHetI is a surfactin PPTase-like PPTase with a broad substrate preference. Moreover, the HetI-like PPTase is ubiquitously conserved in Xanthomonas spp., making it a potential new drug target for the prevention of plant diseases caused by Xanthomonas.[Formula: see text] Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). Heterointerfaces have led to the discovery of novel electronic and magnetic states because of their strongly entangled electronic degrees of freedom. Single-phase chromium compounds always exhibit antiferromagnetism following the prediction of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. So far, exchange coupling between chromium ions via heteroanions has not been explored and the associated quantum states are unknown. Here, we report the successful epitaxial synthesis and characterization of chromium oxide (Cr_{2}O_{3})-chromium nitride (CrN) superlattices. Room-temperature ferromagnetic spin ordering is achieved at the interfaces between these two antiferromagnets, and the magnitude of the effect decays with increasing layer thickness. First-principles calculations indicate that robust ferromagnetic spin interaction between Cr^{3+} ions via anion-hybridization across the interface yields the lowest total energy. This work opens the door to fundamental understanding of the unexpected and exceptional properties of oxide-nitride interfaces and provides access to hidden phases at low-dimensional quantum heterostructures.

Myocardial fibrosis is a pathological process characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix in myocardial interstitial spaces. Myocardial fibrosis is a fundamental process in ventricular remodeling and a primary contributor to the progression of heart failure. Liquiritigenin (LQ) is a flavanone compound with anti­oxidative, anti­carcinogenic, anti­inflammatory and estrogenic properties. The present study aimed to investigate the regulatory potential of LQ treatment in a mouse model of isoprenaline (ISO)­induced cardiac fibrosis and in cultured H9C2 cardiomyocytes stimulated with angiotensin II (Ang II). The treatment of ISO­induced mice with LQ significantly decreased the levels of cardiac injury­related proteins in the serum and ECM accumulation in mouse heart tissues. LQ treatment also effectively alleviated cardiac dysfunction in ISO­treated mice. Further analyses revealed that LQ inhibited ISO­induced collagen formation and activation of the transforming growth factor­ß1 (TGF­ß1)/Smad2 and protein kinase B (AKT)/extracellular signal­regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathways. As a major pathological event in myocardial fibrosis, the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes has been considered a key mechanism contributing to impaired left ventricle performance. The pretreatment of rat cardiomyocytes with LQ significantly reduced the apoptosis of H9C2 cells, and inhibited Ang II­induced activation of the TGF­ß1/Smad2 and AKT/ERK pathways. In conclusion, the present study revealed that LQ ameliorated ISO­induced myocardial fibrosis in mice and inhibited the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes in vitro by inhibiting the TGF­ß1/Smad2 and AKT/ERK signaling pathways. These results suggested the anti­fibrotic and cardioprotective potential of LQ in fibrosis, thus supporting the use of LQ for the management of cardiomyocyte injury and myocardial fibrosis in patients with cardiac diseases.

In this research, we propose two Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) variants to undertake feature selection tasks. The aim is to overcome two major shortcomings of the original PSO model, i.e., premature convergence and weak exploitation around the near optimal solutions. The first proposed PSO variant incorporates four key operations, including a modified PSO operation with rectified personal and global best signals, spiral search based local exploitation, Gaussian distribution-based swarm leader enhancement, and mirroring and mutation operations for worst solution improvement. The second proposed PSO model enhances the first one through four new strategies, i.e., an adaptive exemplar breeding mechanism incorporating multiple optimal signals, nonlinear function oriented search coefficients, exponential and scattering schemes for swarm leader, and worst solution enhancement, respectively. In comparison with a set of 15 classical and advanced search methods, the proposed models illustrate statistical superiority for discriminative feature selection for a total of 13 data sets.

BACKGROUND: The protective role of Prdx6 on rat corneal tissue against ultraviolet B injury in vivo has been confirmed previously. We further investigated the function and molecular mechanism of Prdx6 in human corneal epithelial cells under ultraviolet B radiation. METHODS: The experimental groups were designed as follows: (1) Prdx6 RNAi, (2) Prdx6 RNAi + ultraviolet B radiation, (3) normal human corneal epithelial cells, (4) normal human corneal epithelial cells + ultraviolet B radiation, (5) wild-type Prdx6 overexpression, (6) wild-type Prdx6 overexpression + ultraviolet B radiation, (7) mutant-type Prdx6 overexpression, and (8) mutant-type Prdx6 overexpression + ultraviolet B radiation. The cell survival rate was detected by a Thiazolyl Blue Tetrazolium Bromide assay. Apoptosis, reactive oxygen species, and malondialdehyde were detected with a commercial kit. Gene expression was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: We found the following results. (1) Compared to normal cells, the survival rates were 32%, 87%, and 58% under ultraviolet B radiation in the Prdx6 interference, wild-type overexpression, and mutant-type overexpression groups, respectively. The survival rates were decreased to 50% at 24 h and 31% at 48 h when the phospholipase A2 activity of Prdx6 was inhibited after ultraviolet B radiation. (2) Apoptosis, reactive oxygen species content, and malondialdehyde levels were increased when Prdx6 was downregulated. This phenomenon became more severe under ultraviolet B radiation. (3) The expression levels of apoptosis-related and antioxidant genes all changed along with the changes in expression of Prdx6. CONCLUSION: (1) Both peroxidase and phospholipase A2 activities of Prdx6 are crucial for its protective role in corneal tissue. (2) Downregulated expression of Prdx6 resulted in high endoplasmic reticulum stress. (3) Apoptosis in human corneal epithelial cells with downregulated Prdx6 coupled with ultraviolet B radiation was related to the pathways of DNA damage and the death receptor. (4) Low levels of antioxidants are sufficient for maintaining homeostasis in human corneal epithelial cells without external stimuli. Under the condition that Prdx6 was downregulated, human corneal epithelial cells were more sensitive to ultraviolet B radiation.

Using secondary treated wastewater to irrigate paddies presents an exposure pathway for antibiotics to enter the terrestrial food chain. To date, there has been no information on the biochemical reactions and antibiotic uptake in rice plants irrigated with secondary treated wastewater. The present study investigated antibiotic uptake and concentration-response trends in rice tissues and evaluated the effects of typical antibiotics (tetracycline, roxithromycin, ofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole) on rice growth, grain yield and quality, and rice physiobiochemical characters via irrigation using treated wastewater augmented with varying concentrations (0-500 µg/L) in paddies. The results showed that the antibiotic accumulation in rice plants irrigated with treated wastewater was limited, and the studied antibiotics were not detected in rice grains (edible parts). The ability of rice to withstand certain antibiotics and grow in a healthy manner is attributed to the capacity to maintain reasonably normal photosynthesis activity and to elevate antioxidative defenses. The highest antibiotic concentration (500 µg/L) did not reduce the processing quality of the rice grain, but it enhanced the cooking and eating quality. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that secondary treated wastewater for paddy irrigation is an alternative water resource securing protection from the environment and rice grain quality.

We herein developed and demonstrated a Zeeman frequency modulation scheme for improving the signal-to-noise ratio of microwave electric field measurement using Rydberg atoms. The spectra of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting of Rydberg atoms is frequency modulated by an alternating current magnetic field. The signal-to-noise ratio of the corresponding dispersive error signal is enhanced more than 10 times than that of the original spectrum. Furthermore, we show that the slope of the dispersive error signal near the resonance of the Rydberg EIT can be used to characterize the weak microwave electric field amplitudes. The more intuitive and simpler structure compared with other existing frequency modulation technologies greatly reduces the difficulties of experiments and experimental data analysis.

We herein develop and demonstrate a stable frequency-locking scheme for Rydberg atomic experiments. We use the Zeeman effect to modulate the three-level ladder-type Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) signal to lock the laser frequency of the coupling light for transition from its intermediate state to a Rydberg state. The effects of polarization of the probe and coupling lights, and the amplitude of the AC modulated magnetic field ${{\boldsymbol B}_0}$B0 on the EIT and the corresponding dispersive error signal, are both analyzed. The results show that both the EIT signal and dispersive error signal are the strongest when the polarizations of coupling and probe fields are circular and equal. The signal-to-noise ratio of the dispersive error signal increases with ${{\boldsymbol B}_0}$B0. The slope of the dispersive error signal increases first and then decreases with ${{\boldsymbol B}_0}$B0, which is related to the increase of the EIT linewidth caused by the higher ${{\boldsymbol B}_0}$B0. The linewidth of the laser is significantly less than 500 kHz after frequency locking, which satisfies the requirements of most experiments involving Rydberg atoms. The method proposed herein can generally be applied to any cascade system of Rydberg atoms.

Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), the causal agent of black rot in crucifers, produces a membrane-bound yellow pigment called xanthomonadin to protect against photobiological and peroxidative damage, and uses a quorum-sensing mechanism mediated by the diffusible signal factor (DSF) family signals to regulate virulence factors production. The Xcc gene XCC4003, annotated as Xcc fabG3, is located in the pig cluster, which may be responsible for xanthomonadin synthesis. We report that fabG3 expression restored the growth of the Escherichia coli fabG temperature-sensitive mutant CL104 under non-permissive conditions. In vitro assays demonstrated that FabG3 catalyses the reduction of 3-oxoacyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) intermediates in fatty acid synthetic reactions, although FabG3 had a lower activity than FabG1. Moreover, the fabG3 deletion did not affect growth or fatty acid composition. These results indicate that Xcc fabG3 encodes a 3-oxoacyl-ACP reductase, but is not essential for growth or fatty acid synthesis. However, the Xcc fabG3 knock-out mutant abolished xanthomonadin production, which could be only restored by wild-type fabG3, but not by other 3-oxoacyl-ACP reductase-encoding genes, indicating that Xcc FabG3 is specifically involved in xanthomonadin biosynthesis. Additionally, our study also shows that the Xcc fabG3-disrupted mutant affects Xcc virulence in host plants.
